Barbershop: Promising Business for The Youth

Jepara, 1 November 2024 – PT Bhumi Jati Power (hereinafter “BJP”) has successfully conducted Barber Training on 21 Oct - 01 Nov 2024 (10 days) in the Bangsri Sub-District office which were participated by 16 villagers. All the participants were coming from 3 Sub-districts surrounding PLTU TJB 5 & 6, which are Kembang, Bangsri, and Mlonggo Sub-District. To ensure effectiveness, the participants were selected not only based on age and domicile but also based on the participant’s willingness to refer to the interview result.

The training collaborated with the Agency of Social, Manpower, and Transmigration of Jepara Regency and LPK Barbershop 70 as the appointed training course. This program reflects BJP’s commitment to continuously supporting the surrounding villagers by enhancing their skills and aligning with BJP’s Education and Training Pillar. BJP initiated the Barber Training in response to the growing demand for barbershop business in the Jepara area. Beyond the promising financial opportunities, this business is also timeless because of the need for personal grooming, especially for the youth community, which places a high value on a neat appearance.

Mr. Ari Wibawa, CSR Manager of BJP, conveyed that Indonesia is currently experiencing a demographic bonus, which can be viewed as a double-edged sword with both positive and negative impacts. A demographic bonus occurs when the proportion of the working-age population exceeds that of the non-working-age population. The positive side is economic growth and a surge in consumer demand However, it also presents challenges, such as increasing unemployment rate and decreasing productivity. Thus, through the training, BJP expected the participants to improve their skills therefore they could compete with others while facing demographic bonus. “The barbershop business, in particular, holds great potential as people will always need to be neat and tidy in their daily life.”

Mr. Abdul Muid, representing the Manpower Agency of Jepara Regency, also stated that the key to success is innovation. He advised the participants of the Barber Training to always improve and be innovative if they someday open a barbershop business. Mr. Abdul Muid said, ” When someday you open your own business, you must be different from others so your customers will always return to you. It may come from your services, treatment, attitude, and style.”

Besides giving training, BJP also supported basic barbershop equipment for those 16 participants, such as an apron, towel, barber equipment (comb, hair clips, scissors, and razor), mirror, and other supporting materials. BJP expected that the basic equipment would enable the participants to start their own barbershop business. After the training, BJP will continuously monitor the progress of participants within 6 months to ensure the continuity of the business. If the participants perform well in expanding their business, the BJP may give further support for equipment and training.
